Wrist pain is common  and you can generally ease the pain yourself. This guide will go through the causes of wrist pain, its symptoms and wrist muscle pain relief options, such as Naprosyn® Pain Relief.

Always consult a healthcare professional if you are worried about pain you are experiencing.

What causes wrist pain?

Pain in the wrist can have many causes including:

  • A sprained wrist is a common soft tissue injury that can be caused by a fall or through overuse. The ligament, the tissue that connects the joints, in the wrist is torn or twisted. You may experience pain, swelling, bruising and difficulty moving your wrist or gripping anything.

  • After an injury, the tendon can swell causing tendonitis in the wrist. This may cause pain, swelling, redness and difficulty moving your wrist,  fingers and thumb.

  • Arthritis is a common condition that can cause pain and inflammation in joints such as your wrist. As a result, you may have pain, stiffness, difficulty moving your wrist or a lump in your wrist.

  • Pressure on a nerve in your wrist is known as carpal tunnel syndrome. It can cause an ache in your fingers, hand or arm, numb hands, pins and needles and difficulty gripping.

  • Ganglion cysts are smooth, fluid-filled lumps under your skin that may appear on your wrist. They vary in size and although they are usually painless, you may feel pain during or after moving your wrist.

  • RSI is pain caused by repeated movement of the body and it most often affects your wrists, shoulders, elbows, hands and fingers. You may get RSI if you do repetitive activities like typing, decorating or hairdressing, you use hand-held power tools often or you do repetitive sports like golf or tennis. You may experience burning, aching or throbbing pain, muscle cramps, swelling or numbness.

  • If you’ve injured your wrist and it suddenly becomes painful, swollen, bruised or difficult to move, it may be broken. You may also hear a popping or snapping sound during the injury. If you have broken your wrist, you should go to hospital to have it looked over.

How to relieve wrist pain

You can often ease wrist pain but you should see a GP if the pain doesn’t improve or if you’re worried about it.

Over-the-counter treatments

Pain relief medication can be very effective for treating wrist pain. To help your pain and keep yourself moving, you can take paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)  such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

Naprosyn Pain Relief contains naproxen as its main active ingredient and is indicated for short term musculoskeletal conditions such as wrist pain. Available over the counter, Naprosyn Pain Relief offers up to 12 hours of pain relief from just one dose.

PRICE method

For injuries and wrist muscle strain treatment, it can be helpful to try the PRICE method to bring down swelling. You can do this for the first 2 or 3 days after the injury.

  • Protection - protect the injured area, perhaps by wearing a splint
  • Rest - try not to put any weight or strain on the injury
  • Ice - put an ice pack or bag of frozen peas wrapped in towel on the injury for 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours
  • Compression - wrap a bandage around your wrist
  • Elevate - keep your wrist raised on a pillow.

Rest

Stop or reduce activities that may be causing wrist pain, like typing or using vibrating tools for work. You should try and rest your hand as much as possible for the first 24-72 hours after the injury. However, you should try and maintain some flexibility to prevent stiffness so try gently moving it every so often without causing too much pain.

Wear a splint

A splint can help support your wrist and relieve pain when completing everyday, functional tasks  or during the night. Splints are available to buy at most pharmacies and supermarkets. Make sure not to wear it continuously as it could cause increased weakness and stiffness in your wrist over time.

Gentle exercises

There are a few gentle exercises that can help maintain movement in your wrist. If any of them worsen the pain, stop doing them. Below are some simple wrist exercises you can try:

  • Rest your forearm on a table with your wrist hanging over the edge then bend your wrist up and down.
  • Place your elbow on a table and bring your palms together. Then, slowly slide your elbows apart and bring your hands down towards the table.
  • Interlock your fingers and put your palms together then move your affected wrist up and down without the support of your other hand.
